Registration
Registering for the UTME
From JAMB’s published registration steps; confirm the current year’s procedure on jamb.gov.ng.
A. National Identification Number (NIN)
- Register with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and get your National Identification Number (NIN) first.
- A forgotten NIN can be retrieved by dialling *346# from the phone number used to register with NIMC.
- NIMC’s accredited enrolment centres are listed on nimc.gov.ng.
B. Profile registration
- One mobile number (SIM) can be used by one candidate only. It’s tied to your name and used for all communication about your application, examination and admission, so keep that SIM.
- Send NIN, a space, then your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 by SMS (for example: NIN 00123456789). You’ll receive your 10-character profile code and the name registered with NIMC.
- Take the profile code to where forms are sold (banks, mobile money operators, microfinance banks, switches, USSD partners). Your ePIN is sent to you by text message.
- Take your profile code, ePIN and NIN to any JAMB-accredited CBT centre to register.
- Registration can’t be completed until your fingerprint is verified. Successful verification lets you print your e-registration slip.
- Any change to your registration data later needs your fingerprint authenticated again.
C. If you lose your profile code or make a mistake
- To retrieve a lost profile code, text RESEND to 55019 or 66019 from the same phone number.
- To reset a lost profile password, text PASSWORD, a space, then your email address to 55019 or 66019 from the same phone number.
D. Complaints (free ticketing)
- For any complaint about JAMB processes, create a support ticket at support.jamb.gov.ng with the email address registered with JAMB.
- Give your name, phone number and the nature of the issue, choose the complaint area, summarise it, attach supporting documents if you have them, and send.
Visually impaired candidates
- You must state that you are visually impaired (blind) when you register for the examination.
- You’ll be told your examination centre and town before the examination.

Exam day
Organisation for the exam
Tips as you plan towards the examination
- Put together all the examination materials you must have or present at the examination centre. You will need your e-registration slip: make photocopies and keep them in a safe place.
- Get the final print-out showing your examination venue, time and seat number ahead of the exam day.
- Take all the writing materials you may need, such as pencils or pens.
- Go with your JAMB e-slip and the other documents required for verification at the examination centre.
- Don’t take documents or items you aren’t required to have or present, so nothing gets lost.
- Arrive at the examination centre well ahead of time for biometric verification (accreditation). Locate your centre before the day of the exam so you aren’t late.
Answering multiple-choice questions
Pay attention to instructions
Before you attempt any question, read and understand all the instructions for the examination, right to the end; don’t make assumptions. Your time starts counting when you click Start Exam. Check that the subjects displayed are your choices.
Read questions carefully
Because of time pressure, many candidates rush through questions without reading them properly and pick wrong answers. Read and think through each question before answering: some questions look like past questions you’ve studied, and sometimes two options look alike. Avoid making assumptions.
Selecting answers
- If you aren’t comfortable with the mouse, use the keyboard to select your answers (A, B, C or D).
- Click inside (not outside) the small circle beside the letter of your answer.
- Pick just one answer: multiple-choice questions need exactly one.
- Answer the easy questions first and come back to the hard ones.
- Choose “all of the above” only when you’re sure every option above is correct, and “none of the above” only when you’re sure they’re all wrong.
Crosscheck your answers
If you have time left after answering every question, crosscheck your answers for mistakes. Avoid over-confidence: change an answer only when you’re certain it’s wrong. Make sure you’ve done everything required before you click Submit and end the examination.
Managing exam time
Time management is key in examinations: your result depends partly on how well you manage your time. These tips help during the UTME.
- Log in with your registration number as quickly as possible, and check it after typing. The registration number has 8 digits and 2 letters.
- Know the time allowed for the whole exam. Divide it in minutes by the number of questions: that’s the average time for each question.
- Stay conscious of the time, and try the practice test to see how you’ll manage it in the examination.
- Example: if the UTME lasts 2 hours (120 minutes) for 180 multiple-choice questions, 120 ÷ 180 gives about 40 seconds for each question.
- A power outage or system failure won’t lose your selected answers or your time, so don’t panic. The exam officials will tell you what to do.
Verification at the exam centre
- On arrival, sign in on the Biometric Verification Machine (BVM).
- Sit at the seat labelled with the seat number assigned to you.
- Attendance is taken by seat number.
- After the examination, sign out on the BVM.
Using the keyboard instead of the mouse
Nine keys: A, B, C, D, P, N, S, R, Y
- Press A, B, C or D to choose that option.
- Press N for the next question and P for the previous one.
- When you’ve finished, press S to end the exam. A box asks you to confirm.
- Press Y to end the exam for good.
- Pressed S by mistake? Press R to return and carry on. If you press Y instead of R, the exam is over and you can’t go back.
Practise under exam conditions with free CBT mock exams.
Results and admission
Minimum admission scores (2026 policy meeting)
- Universities150
- Colleges of Nursing150
- Polytechnics, monotechnics, colleges of agriculture and colleges of education100
- Innovation Enterprise Institutions (IEIs)100
- These are the lowest UTME scores (out of 400) an institution may admit with. Many institutions and courses set higher cut-offs; check your institution’s own.
- The minimum age for admission into tertiary institutions remains 16 years.
CAPS: how admission is offered and accepted
- JAMB’s Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) runs all admissions into Nigerian tertiary institutions; admission is processed only through CAPS.
- Institutions propose candidates; the head of the institution recommends; JAMB approves.
- You must accept (or reject) a provisional admission offer on CAPS. Only then can you print your JAMB admission letter.
- Candidates awaiting O’level results must upload them to the JAMB portal before they can be considered.
- Institutions can also find candidates in the CAPS “market place” by score, state, LGA and other criteria, which widens your chances.
- You can check your admission status at any time on the JAMB portal (caps.jamb.gov.ng).
Printing your result slip
The fee is as published by JAMB; confirm the current fee.
- Log in to your JAMB e-facility profile (create one through Sign Up if you’re new: your email, surname, first name, mobile number, state and LGA of origin, and a password; one profile per candidate). Printing the result slip costs ₦1,000.
- On the landing page, choose Print Result Slip on the side bar. A transaction ID is generated and shown on the confirmation page.
- Check the details and note the transaction ID (also emailed to you). Press Continue to pay by card, or use the transaction ID to pay through ATM, bank or Quickteller.
- When payment is complete, enter the year of the exam and your JAMB registration number, then print the result slip.
How federal admission is shared (admission quota)
The quota
- Admission into federal higher institutions through the UTME is shared: merit 45%, catchment area 35%, educationally less developed states (ELDS) 20%.
Merit (45%)
- Reserved for candidates with very high UTME scores, whatever their state of origin. Admission on merit comes first.
Catchment area (35%)
- Some states are the catchment area of each federal institution. 35% of places go to eligible candidates whose state of origin is in the catchment area of the institution they chose.
Educationally less developed states (20%)
- Twenty-three states are listed as educationally less developed: Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Ebonyi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara. Candidates from these states get special consideration: 20% of places are reserved for them.
Printing your admission letter
- Create or log in to your JAMB e-facility profile.
- Choose the admission letter service on the side bar. A transaction ID is generated and shown on the confirmation page.
- Note the transaction ID and pay by card on the Interswitch page, or through ATM, bank or Quickteller. Your payment status shows in My Payments, with an SMS and email.

- Note the transaction ID and pay by card, or through ATM, bank or Quickteller. Then enter the year of the exam and your JAMB registration number.
Condonement of illegal admission (late application)
- Late (retroactive) application, formerly called regularisation, is for candidates already in an institution without a JAMB registration number.
- Create or log in to your JAMB e-facility profile.
- Choose Late (Retroactive) Application on the side bar, then Application for Admission Letter. A transaction ID is generated and shown on the confirmation page.
- Note the transaction ID and pay by card (Continue), or through ATM, bank or Quickteller with the transaction ID. Your payment status shows in My Payments, and an SMS and email are sent.
- Enter the year of the exam and your JAMB registration number, then fill the application form online (mandatory fields are marked) and submit.
- Print the indemnity form shown, fill it and take it to your institution for approval. Your institution sends the approved form to the JAMB state office; it’s uploaded to your profile and you’re notified.
- JAMB then processes the application and, if approved, updates your details.
